What is the difference between a
koi pond and a water garden?
The only things the two types of ponds
have in common is water! Both are beautiful, but have entirely
different purposes.
A koi pond is more elaborate then a
water garden, in terms of recommended equipment. Koi produce a
lot of waste and adequate filtration and water circulation are
essential to ensure a clean, healthy environment for your fish!
This generally includes a biological/mechanical filter, a
skimmer, a bottom drain, jets, and air pumps. Additional
equipment such as UV light to prevent algae can be considered.
A water garden's main focus is plants.
Plants are generally discouraged in koi ponds because the koi
will eat the plants and make a mess of the soil pots. Koi
and plants can co-exist, but it is best if the plant area
is arranged in a way that generally prevents the koi from
accessing the plants. A water garden of a few hundred
gallons could support a couple goldfish without a filter, but
koi will outgrow a traditional water garden and without
filtration the water quality will quickly decline, which will
adversely affect koi health. |
